Hearing stories and watch documentaries on Kruger National Park and the Sabi Sands is one thing and witnessing these legendary lions is something else. There are somethings that just have to be experienced and can not be described in words.
This lion is one is one of the Gowrie Males that are the dominant males in the area where I was.
I had just returned to my lodge after a morning game drive when I was told about two lions that had brought down a zebra within a few hundred meters of where I was staying. Within half an hour I was there and the two lions were taking turns feeding on the zebra carcass. It was pretty gruesome. There is nothing wrong with that, its nature but I wanted to make an image which was a bit more subtle so I asked my ranger to get closer. I got close enough to make this image where I have consciously included just a little hint of the zebra, enough to tell a story.
